48V electric motor complete with power electronics and battery can save a lot of fuel in a combustion engine car – particularly during urban driving. Thanks to their low voltage level mild hybrids of this type do not require costly electrical insulation. This makes them affordable and efficient. As a result, the mild hybrid is perfectly suited for high production volumes and achieves substantial CO2 savings across a whole fleet. The easiest way to integrate a 48V motor is to replace the 12V generator in the belt drive at the front side of the combustion engine, with the 48V motor making it a so-called starter-generator (“P0”). Mild hybrid cars of this type are already in production and save up to around 10% of fuel. Other integration principles are currently being developed. They will allow it to completely disconnect the combustion engine from the powertrain – which helps to save even more fuel. It is expected that this will facilitate an efficiency gain of up to 15%. At low speeds a mild hybrid of this type will also be capable of driving purely electrical. In the future Vitesco Technologies is aiming to facilitate fuel savings of up to 20% through its innovative 48V High-Power motor which offers twice the power of starter-generators. A motor of this type would allow purely electric driving during almost all typical driving situations of urban traffic.
