Hybrid cars, and plug-in hybrid cars in particular, carry a cost burden in comparison to a car with combustion engine only, because a hybrid offers two adequate powertrains. However, this type of hybrid car can save a lot of CO2, especially when utilizing electric energy that was charged from the grid. To lower the cost hurdle of hybrid cars considerably, in a concept study Vitesco Technologies has developed a special hybrid gearbox with two small electric motors (Concept study: “Dedicated Hybrid Transmission”, DHT). By thoroughly utilizing the two motors, the mechanical gearbox’s complexity can be greatly reduced, which makes it less expensive to manufacture. Many years of expertise from transmission control, electric motor know-how and optimum motor control have been harnessed for this development. This project has resulted in a DHT that is fun to drive and will contribute to a notable increase of hybrid car numbers on the roads through a more attractive price level.
