    Vitesco Technologies
    • Vitesco Technologies actively shapes electrification
    • Highly integrated control module in the hybrid transmission ensures maximum efficiency
    • Innovation used in numerous high-volume VW car models

Regensburg, Nueremberg (Germany), Tianjin (China). November 24, 2020. Electrification of the drive system is a megatrend in the automotive industry. Vitesco Technologies, a leading international supplier of modern powertrain technologies and electrification solutions, is one of the pioneers and drivers of this transformation. This is becoming especially clear in the current times. The severely affected automotive industry is gradually regaining momentum and the recovery is characterized above all by more efficient and climate-friendly mobility. Vitesco Technologies offers the necessary system expertise for this transformation – as well as tailor-made, innovative products.

One current example is a transmission control unit specially developed for plug-in hybrid drives. The VW corporation has announced that it will introduce around 30 plug-in hybrid models across all of its brands by 2025. In most of these vehicles, the transmission control unit from Vitesco Technologies will be on board.

The new transmission control unit is the brain of the hybrid six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), including an electric machine. The transmission control unit developed by Vitesco Technologies assumes the tasks of controlling and cooling the transmission system. The crucial innovation is that the control module and all the associated sensors are integrated directly into the transmission, which saves space and weight. This is based on high-tech manufacturing processes that make the control module resistant to the high temperatures and heavy vibration loads prevailing in the transmission.

A total of some two dozen patents have been filed for the sophisticated technology. Vitesco Technologies also received the “PACE” award from the U.S. specialist magazine “Automotive News,” a kind of automotive-industry Oscar for high-tech innovations, for the unit.

The current transmission control unit relies on this award-winning technology and the many years of experience and expertise of Vitesco Technologies in electronic components of this kind. Back in 2013, as a technology partner of Volkswagen, the company already developed the transmission control unit for the VW Golf plug-in hybrid. In addition to the new Golf, the VW Passat is now also available with a plug-in hybrid drive. The compact Tiguan SUV – another volume-produced model – will follow next year.

Production of the Control Unit in Nuremberg and Tianjin

The innovative transmission control unit is currently being produced at the Nuremberg location, with production also set to start at the Chinese location in Tianjin in the near future. Here, Vitesco Technologies already produces a fully integrated electrical final drive, transmission control units and sensor clusters. The company is also currently constructing a new research and development center for emission-free drive technologies in Tianjin.
