While the emissions of a car are clearly important for climate protection – they are only one aspect of the whole situation because manufacturing a car plus recycling and disposing of it at the end of the vehicle’s service life also produce emissions. One has to look at this overall picture from „Cradle-to-Grave” to assess the actual impact a product has on the environment. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) following the ISO 14040/14044 standard is an important instrument to achieve the EU goal of a climate-neutral economy by the year 2050. Vitesco Technologies is proactively driving climate-neutral mobility and the EU targets with its comprehensive Life Cycle Engineering program “Direction 2030”. Applying the LCA methods, this program analyses how every product influences the climate by beginning the assessment with the raw materials, then moving on to the actual manufacturing processes and finally right up to product disposal. There is continuous stream of activities derived from the LCA to make the Cradle-to-Grave balance of all products more sustainable. In order to achieve this, products are specifically designed for environment (DfE) and also designed for circularity (DfC) from the very beginning, to facilitate a sensible utilization at the end of the product lifetime.
